Guys we are going on week 2 or 3 of going crazy with social distancing and self-quarantine so I wanted to put together a few little CFA-curated finds that I’ve been enjoying myself while in quarantine and I think you just might too
“Hello and Everything Little Thing That Matters” is a must read for every executive flight attendant. Kate Edwards, the author, was a guest speaker at NBAA FA/FT convention and this book serves as a big impact for the world in which we serve our passengers in a VIP hospitalty realm. Use this time at home to brush on some interpersonal, hospitality skills and read this golden nugget of wisdom! Buy Here!
I have to admit to you, I don’t have a green thumb at all. I wish I did because I love, love, love the idea of gardening and owning lots of live plants, luckily my gracious mother-in-law shows me the ropes on all things gardening and flowers. I had fun planting this kit at home to have accessible Edible Flowers for some fancy plating at home. Where I live, there is very limited access to Edible Flowers in grocery stores therefore this serves as a really fun, easy craft to get your hands (mildly) dirty at home with. Buy here!
This is another at home plating investment I made. My own micro-green garden. As professional corporate flight attendants, we have a job to make the food we serve look good, which includes practicing your plating skills at home! Micro-greens are the easiest way to “activate” a dish and elevate it with brightness, color, and whimsicality. Start your own window sill garden and never pay top dollar for garnish again! Buy here!
Give yourself a mani & pedi, why did I choose this color to put on here? Because the name of the bottle is “My Private Jet“. Naturally, I own a few bottles of this one because the color name is so cheeky! Buy here!
Who misses strolling the streets of a new city on a layover? I know I do. Often I find that we forget how relaxing and mentally stimulating puzzles can be. I’ve completed two puzzles myself in my two week self-quarantine and plan on framing one as a memento to this strange time we’re living, more so to keep in my home to remember to be grateful for the simple pleasures of going to grab a latte at your favorite cafe, going to the farmers market, or heck just going to a fully stocked Whole Foods. Find a puzzle that resonates with you whether that be a special destination or map and get to it! I personally love this one of a Parisian street, it’s both art and a puzzle in one. Purchase here!
Ever been curious about Molecular Gastronomy and how to make those caviar-like flavor beads out of any liquid ever- well this tool makes it super fool-proof and easy. I have one myself and have been waiting for the perfect occasion to use it. It comes with a booklet of so many ideas and recipes of what you can use it for, this is a fun kitchen gadget to add to any at-home chef’s cabinet. Purchase here!
Looking for a fun fiction read while in quarantine? One of my favorite Flightess readers is also a fabulous writer, Ann Menke! The book is such a fun read and a little embellished glamour of our job.
“Ann Menke’s twenty-five-year-plus career as a corporate flight attendant took her all over the world. She trained flight attendants, pilots, and spoke to professional organizations on safety and on-board services while managing an aviation department of flight attendants. Menke’s passengers were some of the wealthiest and most famous celebrities in the world. In her fictional account, Exposure to a Billionaire, she takes you on a fabulous adventure into her world.” Purchase “Exposure to a Billionaire” here!
I think one of the most important things you can do as a CFA is to always enter the cabin with a smile. Don’t look crazy grinning from ear to ear upon pulling the galley partition door in of course but a smile while serving truly conveys that it is a delight and a pleasure to be serving your guests. A recent Penn State University study confirmed that when we smile we not only appear more likeable and courteous, but we’re actually perceived to be more competent. Use this time to brighten your pearly whites- no one said you couldn’t have a glow up in quarantine! Buy Crest White Strips here!
I definitely see a trend on social media of people starting to bake and cook way more at home which is awesome! It’s a fantastic time to recipe test and practice plating that you might use onboard in the galley. I use these disposable pastry bags all the time at home in my kitchen. I love that they come on a roll similar to cling film or aluminum foil and I can use them liberally for everything without having to clean them. These tips I recommend are also great because their larger, which means that you’re not isolated to “cake decorating” style smaller pastry tips but can use these for a vegetable mash side dish ( potatoes, carrots, parsnips etc) or can be used for fresh whipped cream to decorate desserts. The possibilities are endless. This is one way to really elevate your at home cooking with precision of plating. Purchase Pastry Bags & Piping tips!
